In December, I stand at the counter cutting apples with the sharpest knife. Blade makes a rhythm against the wooden cutting board in the kitchen encased in brick walls and low light, where worn wood floors sway with weight and quiet. Flame speaks a vibrant quiet from the gas stove. Light pouring through the window through waving stalks of trees in the yard where herbs stand grayed by wind, worn, dormant.
